🕍 History & Mission Built between 1930 and 1943, this Catholic convent was established by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Da Lat. Significant financial and moral support came from Suzanne Humbert, wife of then-Governor‑General Jean Decoux. She tragically died in a car accident in 1944 and was buried behind the church per her wishes. Beyond worship, the complex has long served as a center for charity—running orphanages, kindergartens, training programs, and vocational workshops for disadvantaged children. 🏛 Architecture & Layout Spread over approximately 12 hectares (~29.6 acres) atop Lam Son Hill (~1 km southwest of the city center), the complex includes the chapel and two rows of convent buildings. The style is a unique fusion: 17th-century French Normandy architecture (notably the isosceles triangular façade, rose window, stained‑glass windows, and interplay of light) paired with Vietnamese design—particularly the rooftop modeled on the Nha Rong (Highlands communal house) built to withstand local climate and reflect culture. Walls are finished in pink limestone and lime-based render, giving the chapel its characteristic soft hue . A prominent 3 m statue of the Virgin Mary, sculpted in 1943 by French architect Jonchère and modeled as a Vietnamese woman, stands inside—and was donated by Mrs. Decoux. 🌳 Why It's Special Its harmony of Western and Vietnamese architecture within a tranquil garden setting creates a peaceful, photo‑worthy atmosphere unlike any other religious site in Da Lat. The view from the hilltop, lush floral surroundings, and caring community of nuns all contribute to a sense of spiritual peace and cultural charm.
